The Ecological Land Cooperative develops affordable, low impact, smallholdings for ecological agriculture. The high costs of land and rural housing make it nearly impossible for new entrants to farming to establish a farm business. By providing affordable and secure smallholdings, we are helping to address this crisis.
Determined to turn good ideas into reality, to have a positive influence and to give hope to those choosing to live sustainably, we have designed a model for creating affordable, ecological smallholdings. Having successfully developed our first cluster of farms in Mid Devon, we have begun work on our second site in East Sussex and purchased our third site on the Gower.
We show that small-scale ecological farming CAN work in today’s economy. Sustainably managed smallholdings provide low-impact livelihoods, regenerate land and produce good, healthy food for local communities, increasing sustainability and resilience, and improving ecology and biodiversity for future generations.
By supporting new entrants into ecological agriculture we help revitalise rural communities. We want to see a living, working countryside where land is valued as a way to enhance the good of communities and the natural world.

We support communities to develop projects and organise events to reduce waste and promote sustainable living in Mid-Devon and Teignbridge. We provide direct support to community organisations as well as linking groups in the growing CAG Devon network to share skills, resources and ideas.
Projects include food surplus cafes, repair cafes, clothes swaps, composting workshops and skill share events helping people to share, swap, mend, reduce, re-use and recycle.
Whether you are an existing community group or would like to set up a new group in your area, we can help you with:
- day to day support
- fundraising
- insurance
- media and publicity
- training
- seed funding (for new groups)
- monitoring tools to measure your impact so you can show how you are helping the environment and people
- case studies and inspiration

It’s about communities exploring new ways of living by encouraging local resourcefullnesss, celebrating diversity, fostering self empowerment, inspiring change, and ‘thinking outside the box’.
It’s about each individual community coming together to decide what is most appropriate for its own area, uncovering the vast reservoir of local talent, skill and creativity within its community, and then exploring ways of creating simple, elegant solutions that allow us to live in harmony with the natural rhythms of the earth.
All the current members of Blackdown Hills Transition Group live and work in the Blackdown Hills and are committed to working towards a community based response to the challenges posed by oil depletion, decreasing dependence on fossil fuels and Climate Change.
Unlike Transition Towns (Stroud and Totnes) the group is unable to focus on a definable town as the Hills are made up of many villages with loyal communities. Consequently the group has traditionally seen its role as being a hub for information and support to local communities to help them consider how to be increasingly self-sustaining as is practical in our modern age.

Repair Cafe is an international movement that began in The Netherlands and has now spread across the world, with over 100 in the UK and a growing number in Devon. The idea is to repair and re-use rather than dispose of broken household items, with volunteers fixing items for free and passing on their repair skills (with lots of tea and cake). The list of items fixed is varied and includes electrical household items, computers, bicycles, clothing and textiles, toys, garden tools, but really anything you have which is broken and might be repaired can be considered, rather than throwing it away!
Please keep in touch with our Facebook page for more details of dates of cafes.

Devon has lost most of its traditional orchards of large ‘standard’ trees - valuable because of their beauty, history, wildlife and rich variety of local apples. Since 1991 orchard enthusiasts in the northern half of Devon, Save Our Orchards which became Orchards Live in 2002, have been reversing this decline with real achievements:
*Running over 100 training events on all aspects of orchard restoration, establishment, management and production.
*Establishing Annual Apple Day at Rosemoor (with RHS) and Apple Fair at South Molton.
*Organising informal walks, social events and networking opportunities.
*Locating old fruit varieties for propagation as well as listing and photographing them.
*Working with people of Landkey to establish first new mazzard green for a century.
*Establishing a Demonstration Orchard with a local landowner.
*Acquiring cider and juice making kit and other equipment for members to use.
Orchards Live is part of the charitable activities of the Dartington North Devon Charitable Trust (No 1142258). Its voluntary committee meets bi-monthly. Our 250 members pay a modest annual subscription.

The Totally Locally campaign started out in the north of England and has grown into an award-winning worldwide movement that offers ideas and promotional downloads to independent traders. Your Chamber is proposing to use this off-the-shelf support package to continue making Crediton a stronger, more vibrant and resilient place.
If you would like to find out more about Totally Locally then please visit their website. https://totallylocally.org/stuff/
The main message we would like to get across is that
if every adult in Crediton spent just £5 per week in a local shop/business that would put £4.5 million into the local economy.
MEANWHILE, we propose the following:
that local businesses display a poster promoting the ethos of shopping locally
that we plan to join the nationwide Fiver Fest on 8–15 June 2019; businesses willing to create a £5 offer for that period display a poster to that effect
