EGGESFORD SS 61 SE 1/59 Eggesford Barton Farmhouse - 26.8.65 and adjoining farmbuilding - II Farmhouse and farmbuildings. Probably late C18 - early C19, altered and refurbished in mid C19. Exposed local mudstone rubble laid to rough courses with ashlar quoins and arch heads, secondary brick eaves cornice; stone rubble and brick stacks with C19 and C20 brick chimney shafts some of which are plastered and one includes an early bulbous cone chimney pot; slate roofs. 3 ranges of adjoining buildings arranged round farm courtyard. The western range comprises a former dovecote in centre with farmhouse to right and pigsties to left. The north range has storerooms and carriageway and south range has small cartshed at right (west) end, central barn and workshop to left. The farmhouse has 3-room plan with large projecting end kitchen stack. The other rooms have axial stacks and there is a 1-room extension to rear. The pigsties occupy 3 former cottages, two 1-room plan cottages at left end and a 2-room plan cottage between them and the former dovecote, and served by end and axial stacks. These cottages had an unknown former function since the wall appears to include 2 large blocked circular holes. Were these loading hatches? 2 storeys. West range has-irregular 5:1:3-window front. The pigsties/former cottages have C19 3-light casements most still containing rectangular panes of leaded glass but in various states of preservation. Windows and 3 doorways have segmental-headed arches with ashlar voussoirs. The central dovecote breaks forward slightly with gable surmounted by iron weathervane.
