We are an agroecological farm in the depths of South Devon, raising goats and chickens for meat. We make BBQ charcoal from our woods and the farm is home to our working horses aka Dartmoor Horse Loggers. Our overriding aim is to farm regeneratively, to regenerate the soil and grassland, to regenerate the woodland and support the wildlife that lives here while providing ourselves and others with nutritious food and produce that is grown or made in a sustainable manner, the management benefits the livestock and the land, as well as us. We are non-certified organic. Our livestock are fed organic feed and we don't use any chemicals or unnatural fertilisers on the land and our livestock and wildlife are both thriving!

Pasture Raised Chicken

Our pasture raised chickens have a happy, healthy and enriched life. They are put onto fresh pasture everyday where they enjoy searching for bugs, scratching about and eating grass. They are fed organic feed on top of the food they get from the pasture. They are outside in a moveable pen which has shelter so they breath fresh air 24hrs a day and have access to both shade and sunshine. The nutrients they get from eating fresh grass and bugs means the meat is more nutitrious and of fuller flavour and texture.

BBQ Charcoal

Our BBQ Charcoal is made from wood we extract from our own woodland and other woodlands we sustainably manage with our horses. The timber used is from thinning's and extracted with horses, this is a sustainable method of woodland management where the smaller trees are taken out to let the bigger ones grow. The woodland will have continuous cover.

Our charcoal is made using traditional methods with a ring kiln. The burn is carefully managed to produce beautiful charcoal that burns hot and lasts a long time when being used. It is chemical free, pure wood. We pride ourselves on producing big lumpy charcoal that cooks food well. It is graded over a 25mm mesh to produce decent sized charcoal pieces for better cooking. Our charcoal is made from woodlands within the South Hams and is made and sold in the South Hams meaning the mileage from woodland to BBQ is very small. Folks use our charcoal for cooking on little BBQ's up to Kamado BBQ's, it has been used by chefs to cook skewers and to smoke dry chillies.

The vast majority of charcoal used in this country comes from abroad, mainly South Africa. The wood used for this charcoal isn't suitable for charcoal hence why they cover it in petrochemicals to help it light, this taints the food and is generally just not nice. It obviously travels a long distance and isn't treated well so ends up being in very small pieces which isn't good for BBQ use.

Boer Goats

We have a beautiful herd of Boer goats that we raise for their delicious meat. Not only do they provide us with food but they also help us to regeneratively manage our grassland. We use a method called mob grazing to keep them on small areas of grass and then move them regularly, this benefits them as they are given fresh grazing regularly, it benefits the land as it doesn't get over grazed of trampled and it benefits wildlife as it creates a mosaic of grassland habitat as they move through the fields.

Dartmoor Horse Loggers

Dartmoor Horse Loggers is the woodland and forestry management section of our farm. It is long established, nearly 10 years! Spindle Wood Farm is home to our two beautiful working horses, Beano and Polly. We use them to extract timber from woodlands but they also do some field based work in the form of bracken bashing, mowing and harrowing. If you would like to find out more about this side of our business please visit
