The recorded history of the Ashridge Court Estate goes back to the 1300's when Edwina de Valletort, a scion of the Norman barons of North Tawton, married Richard Wood and they settled here. Surrounded by verdant woodland and rolling fields, the estate has waxed and waned through the years with the fortunes of it's owners. Nestled into the edge of North Tawton, the estate has links as far apart as India and the Prayer-book Rebellion. Without too much ado, people have been making a living from this land for at least 1000 years, quietly sowing and reaping whilst wars, plagues and politics swept on around them. Long may it continue.

Southwood is a small wood in the Taw Valley, North Devon whose owners aim to improve its bio-diversity.
Southwood is on a steep hill on the sides of the Taw valley. South-facing with quite heavy, clay soil it is predominantly oak that appears to have colonised a previously cleared stretch of woodland about 60 years ago. The trees are densely packed, which means that there is little lateral growth and a high canopy that excludes a lot of light from reaching the woodland floor. Along with the oak there is occasional ash, beech, hazel and birch but they are generally struggling to compete.
Rhododendron had invaded more than 50% of the wood, but has now largely been eliminated with the help of a grant from Countryside Stewardship. Holly has also invaded and there is still virtually no under-storey due to the lack of light and to vigorous competition from the invasive species. The central part of the wood was 30% thinned in 2018 and we are just beginning to see what a difference this can make. The wood has a Spring that supplies water to the local hamlet of Kingford and its overflow feeds a new, small pond. There is a track through the wood that is adequate for 4x4 and a network of paths is being developed. A new track that can provide access for a compact tractor is planned in the East side of the wood.

We are an agroecological farm in the depths of South Devon, raising goats and chickens for meat. We make BBQ charcoal from our woods and the farm is home to our working horses aka Dartmoor Horse Loggers. Our overriding aim is to farm regeneratively, to regenerate the soil and grassland, to regenerate the woodland and support the wildlife that lives here while providing ourselves and others with nutritious food and produce that is grown or made in a sustainable manner, the management benefits the livestock and the land, as well as us. We are non-certified organic. Our livestock are fed organic feed and we don't use any chemicals or unnatural fertilisers on the land and our livestock and wildlife are both thriving!

Black Rabbit farm is a woodland with an organic orchard at its heart. In this biodiverse environment, we strive to work hand in hand with nature, and learn from all the plants and creatures around us.
We produce our pure fruit craft ciders with carefully selected apples from our orchards, varieties are blended together, to complement each other, long fermented, and then bottle conditioned to a gentle fizz.
We produce all our lumpwood charcoal, with the wood from our land, sustainably sourced from our hedgerows and coppice. Free of chemicals or additives, our restaurant grade charcoal gives a good clean flavour, is easy to light, and a pleasure to use.
For us, our business is all about this place, an insect rich, pesticide free oasis, home to a great many living things, big and small, ever changing with the seasons, constantly surprising, and full of wonder.
We have tipi accommodation set in a secluded clearing in the woods, cooking on an open fire, whilst listening to the birds, for couples only, get away from it all, and relax….

We are a small family business based in Dulverton, at the heart of Exmoor in Somerset. Our Bio-Char and Charcoal are produced from waste and surplus timber from woodland management projects on Exmoor.
Efficient and Clean
Our products are 100% British, all of our charcoal products are made using our mobile Retort and all our wood is sourced from within Exmoor National Park.
A Retort is a method of making very high grade charcoal, which is 75% greener and cleaner for the environment than a traditional ring kiln.

We set up this website in 2012 to promote locally produced charcoal. At that time we had been producing charcoal for 3 years and had ourselves been surprised by the environmental and ethical differences between locally produced and imported charcoal. As we have enough customers for our charcoal, it seemed sensible to promote other local producers especially as we were getting inquiries from all over the country. Clearly it is better that these people buy charcoal from a producer based close to them.

Courage Copse Creatives is a small woodland enterprise based in the Taw Valley, North Devon run by owner/managers Katy and Vince.
We specialise in producing woodland products that are both sustainable and ethical, in particular our top quality barbecue charcoal and Pure bioChar. The majority of our products are made from or grown in our own woodland, Courage Copse. We use low impact management methods including timber extraction with horses.
As well as being producers of various products we also run and host courses and workshops for both children and adults.
We would primarily consider ourselves as ‘craftworkers’. Whether that is when we are engaged in the heritage craft of charcoal making or coppicing, or crafting a piece of furniture from our harvested timber or crafting an exciting educational workshop!

The Tarka Trail is named after Henry Williamson’s famous novel “Tarka the Otter”. The story was based around many of the locations along the Trail, which follows the route of a disused railway line between Braunton and Meeth. With up to 21 miles of safe, level and traffic-free riding on offer, a bike is the perfect way of exploring the area.
Our cycle hire centre is conveniently located beside Barnstaple Railway Station, with large, inexpensive parking and is the perfect start point for exploring North Devon by bike. We take great pride in looking after our hire fleet, and with an extensive range of over 130 cycles available, we have a bike to suit everyone.
On our routes you will experience some of the best of the Tarka Trail and have the chance to explore the beautiful estuary of the rivers Taw and Torridge. En route to either Bideford or Braunton for refreshment, you can take in the countryside Devon is so famed for and enjoy a truly great day out!
