We develop community-owned renewable energy in Devon. We aim to reduce our local carbon footprint and lower our dependence on imported energy in partnership with schools, businesses and local people.
Our Aims
Totnes Renewable Energy Society (TRESOC) is an IPS formed by a group of local residents in 2007. Its aim is to empower the local community to develop and control its own renewable energy supplies and to ensure that the maximum value resulting from the development of local resources is retained by the community.
TRESOC aims:
To develop the profitable supply of energy from renewable resources for the benefit of the community centred in Totnes and the surrounding area.
To ensure the democratic control of renewable energy resources, by the local community, through the establishment of an extensive membership of the Society.
To ensure that the maximum value from development of these resources shall be retained within the local economy.
To provide an opportunity for public-spirited people and organisations to contribute financially to the community with the expectation of a social dividend as well as a financial return.

We grow trees from locally collected seed in our own nurseries, nurtured by lots of local volunteers, and then use them to recreate woodland that has become a rare sight in the countryside.
Here at Moor Trees we have planted over 100,000 trees with the help of volunteers and generous donations and we are on a mission to keep going.
This last year, we have grown over 15,000 native broadleaf trees from seed in our nurseries and we are about to plant them to create semi-natural woodlands around Dartmoor and help combat climate change.

Transition Network is a charity which works to inspire, encourage, connect, support and train communities world-wide as they self-organise around the Transition model.
We work with and alongside a grass-roots movement of independent Transition initiative community groups and Transition Hubs in many countries. We aim to evolve as an organisation alongside the Transition movement, which is changing and deepening, while being clear about the roles that we undertake.
A strength of the Transition movement is that people working at local community level can learn from others in communities around the world. Transition Network is constantly looking for ways to encourage and enable the sharing of ideas, learning and support, across and beyond the Transition movement. Being part of a network means we can create change more quickly and more effectively, drawing on each other’s experiences and insights.

This is the campaign page for Plastic Free Totnes, a community driven movement aimed at reducing use of unnecessary single use plastics (SUPs) across the town. The campaign formed out of the TTT Waste Into Resources group that met monthly from December 2016 to discuss local sustainable waste solutions . The group decided that the plastic issue alone demanded full attention as a global environmental catastrophe happening before our very eyes.. We are signed up to the 'Plastic Free Communities' campaign led by Surfers Against Sewage which sets out 5 smart objectives for the town to meet. We have so far run two roadshows in the town ‘Plastic Surgeries’ and have signed up numerous business to the Refill campaign (look out for the water refill stations). We want to work with local businesses and the whole community to find alternatives, sharing information and encourage action to reduce SUPS' and address devastating plastic pollution.

The Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009 (MaCAA) introduced a new framework for managing the marine environment and providing greater access to it. This Act of Parliament replaced Sea Fisheries Committees with Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities (IFCA’s) and is fundamental to the work of D&S IFCA.
The Devon and Severn IFCA is the largest of the ten separate IFCA districts and has two separate coastlines. The area of the District is 4522km² and is defined in the Statutory Instrument (2010 No. 2212). The D&S IFCA District includes the areas of Devon, Somerset, Gloucestershire County Councils; Bristol City and Plymouth City Councils; North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Councils and all adjacent waters out to six nautical miles offshore or the median line with Wales.
“D&S IFCA will lead, champion and manage a sustainable marine environment and inshore fisheries, by successfully securing the right balance between social, environmental and economic benefits to ensure healthy seas, sustainable fisheries and a viable industry”
The Full Authority is comprised of 30 members drawn from relevant Local Authorities (Councillors), General Members (appointed to the Authority by the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) and Statutory Appointees representing the MMO, the Environment Agency (EA) and Natural England (NE). D&S IFCA is funded via several different funding Authorities (councils) with an additional contribution from central government. Officers are employed by D&S IFCA to conduct work on behalf of the Full Authority. D&S IFCA has ten full time officers and one part-time office manager. The main office is situated in Brixham with one officer located in the Severn area of the District.

Surfers Against Sewerage have started a Plastic Free Coastlines campaign which hopes to reduce the amount of plastics entering the marine environment. To achieve this the project aims to work with communities to help reduce single use plastic (SUP) use.
The campaign will;
- work with the council to pass a motion in favour of supporting a reduction in plastic use
- work with businesses to encourage alternative options to items such as straws and disposable cups
- organise river cleans (working with Ivybridge Environmental Action Group)
- work with community groups such as schools/colleges etc to help educate and inform on the impacts of plastics

The Ivybridge Environmental Action Group (IEAG) provided the fertile bed from which the PL:21 Transition Initiative has grown. Founded in 2003 by Tess Wilmot through her desire to clean up the River Erme and other aspects of the town, this group of proactive souls has continued to grow, in numbers and influence.
IEAG is very much a hands on organisation that likes to roll its sleeves up and get its hands dirty with 'Action' being a very fundamental aspect of the group. the group undertakes work such as river clean ups, litter picks and general conservation work. The group also supports community work around developing and enhancing public spaces in and around Ivybridge.
