The Devonshire Association Geology Section arranges an annual programme of lectures (held on Saturday mornings around the county) and a mix of field trips. Proud that one of the main founders of the Devonshire Association, William Pengelly of Torquay, was a geologist, the Geology Section is open to all who may be interested, regardless of their prior knowledge (if any) of geology.
Day field trips (advance booking is needed) are primarily in Devon and adjacent counties, but the group also ventures further afield on Spring weekend trips (recently to Somerset, West Cornwall, Bath, Shropshire, Pembroke) to see how the rocks of Devon fit within a wider geological framework. The annual Autumn week-long trip has visited geological sites both in Britain and abroad, including Brittany, Jersey, the Czech Republic, Northumbria, the Lake District and North Wales.
Close links are maintained with other geological societies in the South West and occasional joint events are held. The section is affiliated to the Geologists’ Association.
