British Wool (formerly British Wool Marketing Board) is owned by approximately 40,000 sheep farmers in the UK. We collect, grade, market and sell British wool on behalf of our producers to the international wool textile industry for use in flooring, furnishings and apparel.
Wool graded through our system is quality assured and fit for purpose. Products bearing our distinctive logo of the shepherd’s crook and Union Jack are British wool rich - a mark that consumers can trust. Our Head Office is in Bradford, with regional offices in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The uses & advantages of wool
The advantages of wool aren’t confined to one particular product, and its benefits are apparent across many different areas.
Wool is a natural fibre grown on sheep that roam freely in the countryside and on the hills of the UK. Sheep re-grow their fleece every year, making wool one of the most sustainable fibres available. Farming also helps to preserve the UK’s landscapes, as sheep grazing maintains our countryside, creating habitats for wildlife to thrive.
As long as there is grass for sheep to eat, wool can be produced, in contrast to synthetic fibres, which require oil and refineries, a non-renewable resource for man-made fibre production.
An advantageous aspect of British wool, is that it is a truly dynamic fibre, used to create a broad range of beautiful, versatile and durable products, including carpets, bedding, clothing, furniture and craft materials, offering unique benefits to each of these products. - Carpets The floor is usually the hardest working surface in any home so British wool, which is hard wearing and durable, is a great choice. Wool has a natural ability to recover its shape, resisting the indentations left by furniture, and is naturally stain resistant, so wool carpets are quick and easy to clean. Flame resistant and non-combustible, wool is a safe choice.
- Beds & bedding Wool has the ability to regulate your body temperature naturally, allowing you to sleep deeper and longer. This is because wool is able to ‘breathe’, absorbing moisture in the environment when the atmosphere is damp, and then releasing it again when the atmosphere is drier. Wool is also naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to bacteria, mould and funghi.
- Clothing British wool has been used for centuries to create warm, durable clothing. A key benefit, is its comfortable, breathable, and hypoallergenic properties. Furthermore, it takes colour exceptionally well, producing depth and clarity of shade. Adding only a small percentage of British wool to a clothing blend will help it withstand continuous wear and prevent creasing.
- Interiors British Wool brings comfort, structure and durability to everything from upholstery to soft furnishings.
