Hampshire based natural historian

A lifelong passion for wildlife has given me a sound grounding in the natural world. I have been fortunate enough to be able to put my experience and knowledge to good use over the last few decades. My work has taken me all over the globe and provided me with a deep understanding and knowledge of the natural world - a passion that has shaped my entire life.

I have written more than 20 books on natural history, co-authored and contributed to many more, and written numerous articles for magazines.

I am a keen wildlife photographer and have illustrated many of my books using my own images. These are managed with renowned photolibrary Nature Photographers Ltd.

I am on the lecture circuit for the RSPB, National Trust and many other organisations and regularly give talks to local members, groups and natural history societies. I currently have over 15 lectures ranging from the wildlife found in your garden to the story of the survival of the Bermuda Petrel. Please take a look at my lectures page for more information.

In addition to my writing and photographic work, I regularly lead wildlife tours abroad for companies including Naturetrek, from the flowers of the Italian Gargano Peninsula to the wildlife of Bulgaria.

As founding director, I helped establish the Bird Photographer of the Year competition. This has become a major international photographic competition, helping to promote bird photography and supporting conservation through its association with the British Trust for Ornithology.
