Plymouth College of Art is a specialist, independent art college supporting a community of artists from the creative industries. With a heritage dating back 150 years, the college offers a unique environment that combines traditional techniques with up-to-the-minute thinking and cutting-edge digital facilities, such as the globally connected Fab Lab. We are home to a dynamic, cross-disciplinary community of makers and thinkers for whom making is as important as reading and writing, and where the purpose of learning is inseparable from that of living your life. We believe that high-quality education for life in contemporary arts practice is the creative catalyst for personal, professional and cultural transformation.

Advancing knowledge, transforming lives.
We will be a broad-based, research-intensive university, open to all who can benefit from a University of Plymouth education, and delivering excellent interdisciplinary research, experiential education and civic engagement.
We want to maintain and build upon our pre-eminence internationally for contributions to the sustainability of marine and maritime environments and societies. The marine environment is integral to the well-being of life on Earth. Covering 70% of the Earth’s surface, the marine environment is home to 95% of the Earth’s species. Humans are dependent on the oceans more than ever before – for food, oxygen, water, mineral, sustainable energy. Yet vast areas remain unexplored. Mega cities of the world are on coasts, capitalising on economic and trade benefits but impacting on, and vulnerable to, marine environments and climate change impacts.

Green Minds aims to put nature at the heart of our decision making and inspire a new wave of citywide investment in nature based solutions.
This means fundamentally challenging our existing attitudes and behaviours towards nature: how we think about it; how we engage with it; how we work with it.
Aims
Over the next 3 years, Green Minds will test a broader, systems approach to delivering nature-based solutions in Plymouth (2020-2023). From the learning we will develop a kitbag of resources, tools and evidence for sharing more widely.
Working in partnership Green Minds will
- Inspire people to connect with nature through delivering rewilding and nature-based projects on the ground that increase habitats and species diversity
- Experiment with different delivery and management approaches that support community stewardship and green enterprise, creating ‘green mindsets’
- Use science and creative digital tools to make nature visible and exciting
- Evaluate our impact and communicate what we learn in innovative and creative ways

Food Plymouth is the City’s recognised Local Food Partnership
A ‘central connecting hub’ for all food-related matters in the City.
Our multi-sector award winning partnership, founded in 2010, comprises a diverse mix of agencies, organisations, businesses, community groups and individual citizens, all working together to actively promote and lobby for healthy, sustainable and affordable food as a driver for positive change.
The collaborative work of the Food Plymouth partnership is expressed through the six strands of our action plan, each of which focuses on transforming a different aspect of our food system. The six themes are illustrated in our symbolic lighthouse diagram, detail for each theme can be found on the Actions page.
The Food Plymouth partnership and network is facilitated and resourced by Food Plymouth CIC

Plymouth has been a Fairtrade City since 2004
Fairtrade Plymouth aims to unite all those working towards Plymouth's commitment to Fairtrade...whether you buy or consume Fairtrade products, offer them to your staff in your canteens or sell them...either in supermarkets or in local food outlets. By doing so you are helping to ensure the livelihoods and wellbeing of all those who grow and produce the products around the world. You are helping to ensure access to education, health services, water, legal representation and a fair wage amongst other things. Just remember when you pay for something you are "voting for the world you want". Fairtrade Plymouth is working on an Action Plan for the next few years and will be applying to renew the city's Fairtrade. Please be a part of it !

Our vision is of a world where creative energy drives environmental change
Our mission is to provide a tool for local recycling and creative engagement to empower the community to live sustainably.
This excellent idea comes from Precious Plastic, a global community, who in the true spirit of social enterprise, put their idea out there for us all to use. You can view all the designs, products and community here: https://preciousplastic.com/ . Basically, it involves recycling plastic by shredding it, heating it and remoulding it into new useful/artistic creations. The plans for building the machines are open source and they are simple and quite cheap to build. We plan to use this to recycle plastic which is otherwise difficult to recycle and reduce transport and other associated costs by recycling locally. We think of this as a fun project to bring the community together, engage with recycling and plastic waste issues and get creative. Even better, this process can create high quality plastic products which can be sold.
