Tavistock Group of the Ramblers was formed in 1976 and has been walking ever since.
On the edge of Dartmoor, close to the Cornish border and not far from the South West Coast Path, we have some of the finest walking in the country.
We have a full programme of walks with experienced leaders throughout the year. We walk every Saturday and Sunday, many Wednesdays and on some Summer evenings.
Our walks are varied in length and cater for the experienced walker and also those new to walking.
We also have a good programme of social events and the occasional group holiday and away day.
We are a small group with a friendly reputation and you are welcome to come walking with us.

Plymouth Ramblers is organised within the framework of the national Ramblers Association. We are a large group with over 280 paid up members. (Luckily they don't all turn out at the same time!) We have an active committee supported by other volunteers who look after the interests of the group.
We have regular organised walks on Sundays, Wednesdays, some Saturdays, and on Thursday evenings during the summer. Most of our walks are within a 25 mile radius of Plymouth. We also have occasional social events and trips away.

We are a friendly and welcoming group of people.
Every Sunday, we offer a strenuous walk of generally ten to fifteen miles, often over the rough and rugged terrain of Dartmoor. The walks generally start at 10am from different places around Dartmoor.

Back in 1993 a group of environmentally conscious allotment holders launched a community composting project. They wanted to compost garden clippings going to landfill and create a local recycling facility for other items. All were committed to principles of zero waste and environmental sustainability. The rural skip service was being filled up with many reusable, recyclable and compostable items and the nearest recycling centres were 15 and 22 miles away. The group started their activities around the skips that came to the town each month and took out as much reusable and recyclable materials as possible.
Proper Job Limited was set up by these founding members in 1995, describing itself as “a community business committed to principles of sustainability and helping to create jobs”. This is still true for Proper Job over twenty years on. Plans were developed to find a permanent site for larger scale compost production, which also included the holistic vision which embraced the concept of a healthy community. This was achieved through principles of community participation, with recycling and sustainability as a central feature.

Hatherleigh History Society was founded in 1981 when the Town was celebrating one thousand years of recorded history. Our purpose is to research the Town’s history and build up a permanent archive of photographs and documents. We hold monthly meetings with visiting speakers talking on a wide range of subjects of both local and wider historical interest.
The Rev Norman Hillier who was vicar of Hatherleigh in 1981 was instrumental in establishing the Society and he remained as Chairman until his retirement in 1986.
The Society meets on the second Monday of the month in ‘Old Schools’ in Hatherleigh’s Old Market Square and details of meetings are advertised here, on our facebook page and in the Parish Pump. Visitors are very welcome to attend our meetings at a cost of £2.
