Hatherleigh is a gem of a town nestling in hills on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park. At its heart lies Hatherleigh Community Primary School which plays a full part in the cultural and social life of the town. The achievements of the pupils of Hatherleigh School are celebrated in the town's 'Parish Pump' local newspaper and their talents demonstrated to the full in the Hatherleigh Festival which takes place each year in July.
The building might be Victorian but the curriculum is up to the minute, varied and driven by an energetic and committed staff. We ensure that the arts, sciences and physical activities have their fair share of school time and that children have the chance to shine in at least one area of school life whether it be playing the violin or running the hundred metres. Our pupils still find it fun to learn and take delight in questioning. They have an easy relationship with adults in the school giving Hatherleigh very much a family atmosphere. We are an ecologically friendly school in which children, led by their school councillors save water and power, finding ways to protect and conserve their beautiful environment.

Children’s author Michael Morpurgo and his wife Clare founded Farms for City Children at Nethercott House in Devon in 1976. The charity offers urban children from all over the country a unique opportunity to live and work together for a week at a time on a real farm in the heart of the countryside. It is an intense, ‘learning through doing’ experience of a different life – for children who may not know where their food comes from and have limited opportunities to explore the outside world.

Devon Wildlife Trust The Conservation Communities project is working in 11 parishes between Great Torrington and Hatherleigh to record as much about the natural environment as we can. Plenty of exciting species can no doubt be found in this area, but we know little about what and where they are, and how they’re doing. This project will work with communities to share skills and gain confidence in identifying what is in the local area and how to protect it.
The 11 parishes covered by the project: Great Torrington, Little Torrington, Merton, Huish, Meeth, St. Giles in the Wood, Beaford, Dolton, Dowland, Iddesleigh, Hatherleigh.

DBRC This project builds on many years of landscape-scale work in North Devon by both of our organisations, including the development of biodiversity audits by DBRC for numerous parishes within the NIA project. In October 2019 we secured funding through the New Heritage Lottery Fund, to work in 11 of those parishes, supporting local residents and community groups to get involved in a range of biodiversity led initiatives, which will greatly improve our collective understanding of the species and habitats there. Residents will be able to attend a range of training workshops, walks and talks, and alongside local experts, individuals and volunteer groups will be supported in a range of nature-based activities. These include setting up long term monitoring of indicator species, such as otters and dormice, sharing knowledge on nature-friendly verge management, pond creation and improving access to nature for local residents.

The Museum of Dartmoor Life is a fascinating museum, dedicated to the interesting history of Dartmoor and its people. It is currently closed following government advice due to COVID-19 and will announce re-opening date as soon as the conditions change. (11/2/2021)
The Museum of Dartmoor Life’s museum’s original collection, which was transferred from a private museum, soon outgrew the space available and in 1983 sufficient grants and donations (£50,000 in total) had been raised to renovate the three-storey mill building. This entailed re-roofing the building and completely gutting the interior. As far as possible, the original architecture and construction was replicated,
In 2005 the museum closed for 12 months for extensive renovation and modernisation. This project cost some £700,000 and was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund with additional support from Okehampton Town Council, West Devon Borough Council, Devon County Council, the Okehampton United Charity and the Dartmoor National Park Authority. The improvements included new electrics and heating throughout the building, partial air-conditioning, a lift and modifications to facilitate access, a state-of-the-art exhibition gallery and new interpretive displays.
In recent years the museum has enjoyed an excellent reputation as a focal point for community activities, events and exhibitions. It provides a meaningful visitor experience and enjoys positive reviews from internal and external visitors. Volunteers have always been the lifeblood of the organisation and the museum’s current volunteers provide a range of services and disciplines to maintain the day to day operation.
Since 2014 the museum has undertaken the role of providing tourist information for North Dartmoor and the local area.
